SACN Member Dr Anthony Williams, Senior Lecturer & Consultant in Neonatal Paediatrics at St.George's Hospital Medical School, has been appointed to the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP) on an ex-officio basis. Further details of the ACNFP can be found at: http://www.food.gov.uk/science/ouradvisors/novelfood/
Dr Williams' appointment to the ACNFP will provide an opportunity to encourage effective and efficient communication of information between the two committees, as well as a consistency of approach to nutritional matters in relation to the evaluation of novel foods. The maintenance of such links between committees was recommended in the FSA's recent Review of Scientific Committees (paragraph 50), which can be found at http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/CommitteesReview.pdf
The appointment will be for the duration of Dr Williams' membership of the SACN, until the end January 2005.
In accordance with the Government policy on transparency in working procedures, SACN operates from a presumption of openness. Dates of meetings and agendas are published in advance and the minutes made available on the website as soon as they are agreed.
