Announcing the appointment of a new Chair and six new Members to the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition

 

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition would like to announce the appointment of a new Chair and six new Members to the Committee.

It is exciting to see such a balance of expertise on this Committee, which is so vital to the work on improving the public health and nutrition of our society"

CHAIR

Dr Ann Prentice, Director at MRC Human Nutrition Research, Cambridge, will take over as Chair from July 2010.

Dr Prentice's main research interests are nutritional aspects of bone health and osteoporosis; dietary requirements for human growth, pregnancy and lactation, and old age with particular reference to micronutrients.  She has published extensive peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and reports.  Dr Prentice was President of the Nutrition Society (from 2004 to 2007) and has served on a number of national and international advisory committees, including COMA's Subgroup on Nutrition and Bone Health.

Dr Prentice has been a Member of the SACN since January 2001 and we are very pleased to welcome her as Chair.

 

MEMBERS

Six new Members have been appointed, as of December 2009, to cover areas in the Committee not currently represented by experts.  The SACN are delighted to welcome the following experts as Members of the Committee:

Dr Susan Lanham New
Reader in Nutrition Division of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey.

Dr Julie Lovegrove
Reader in Nutritional Metabolism and Deputy Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Research at the University of Reading.

Professor Harry McArdle
Deputy Director of Science and the Director of Academic Affairs at the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health, University of Aberdeen.

Professor Hilary Powers
Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry and Head of Human Nutrition Unit, University of Sheffield.

Professor Angus Walls
Professor of Restorative Dentistry within School of Dentistry (the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (HEFCE)) and Hon. Consultant in Restorative Dentistry to the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Ian Young
Professor of Medicine and Director of Centre for Public Health, Queen's University Belfast and Associate Medical Director (Research and Development), Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

 

We are pleased to have found six highly suitable experts for the positions advertised and are grateful to all applicants to what was a very successful appointment process.

Note:  All appointments are for an initial 3 years with maximum possible terms of 10 years before the need to reapply in open competition.
