This year saw the continued work of several groups established in previous years: the Energy Requirements Working Group, the Iron Working Group and the Maternal and Child Nutrition Subgroup as well as the forming of two new groups: the Carbohydrates Working Group and the Folate/Cancer Working Group.

In 2008 the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) published a report on The Nutritional Wellbeing of the British Population which summarises the analysis of the results of the British National Diet and Nutrition Surveys (NDNS).  The Committee also published position statements on dietary fibre & health and the dietary fibre definition and genetic testing. In addition, position statements on the nutrition requirements for multiple pregnancies, the use of ‘Good Night' Milks for infants aged over 6 months and  a commentary on the key findings of the 2005 Infant Feeding Survey were prepared by the Subgroup on Maternal and Child Nutrition (SMCN).
