In 2011, SACN completed and published three major reports - ‘Iron and Health’ (February), The influence of maternal, fetal and child nutrition on the development of chronic disease in later life’ (June), and ‘Dietary Reference Values for Energy’ (October).  In March 2011, SACN published a joint statement with the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) on the ‘The timing of the introduction of gluten into the infant diet’.

With the completion of these major reports, the Committee began work on a review of Vitamin D and the associated health outcomes, for which was established the Vitamin D Working Group.  Work commenced on the Subgroup on Maternal and Child Nutrition’s (SMCN) review of complementary and young child feeding, and the Committee was able to revisit the draft position paper on selenium and health. The Carbohydrates Working group continued their ongoing review on carbohydrates and health.
